The Communication and Media Studies program at Franklin University explores the dynamic and significant place of communication and media in our contemporary lives and communities (local and global). Our program introduces students to a wide range of approaches, issues, and topics in communication and media studies with the aim of cultivating understanding of complex human communication processes and the role of media in our own communities and across the world, as well as, the ability to communicate effectively and thoughtfully in diverse geographical and cultural contexts.
Students in our program will be introduced to theories in the
areas of: intercultural communication; media systems,
organizations and issues (global, international and local); mediated
communication; interpersonal communication; and rhetorical and critical studies.
Courses and capstone projects will encourage students apply these theories to various
contexts and specific issues. At the practical level, students will be given
the opportunity to develop and enhance their information literacy, critical
thinking and reasoning skills, interpersonal and intercultural communication
competence, listening and speaking skills, writing skills, and media literacy.
The
major in Communication and Media Studies prepares students to continue their
studies at the graduate level in Communication and Media Studies and related
fields, as well as, for employment in professional areas such as media
management and research, human resources, public relations and outreach,
advocacy and campaigning, marketing, advertising, and communication-related consulting.
